Understanding Daycare Regulations
If you want to start a daycare business, one of the first things you need to do is to find out about daycare
regulations for your state. You can start by contacting your state daycare licensing agency who will direct you to
your local agency. When you inquire about daycare regulations, your local agency will usually send you an
information package which includes application forms, a document with regulations and the steps you need to take in
order to get your license.
Some states do not require that daycare providers be licensed, but they may require you to be registered
depending on the number of children that you intend to care for and the age range. Daycare regulations will differ
from state to state so you should contact the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care And
Early Education for Individual States' Child Care Licensure Regulations. Their contact telephone number is
1-800-598-KIDS (5437).
Also, remember that daycare regulations for home daycare are different from daycare centers. Here is a list of
organisations and their contact details which you may find helpful when considering daycare regulations:
1. National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education Telephone: 1-800-598-KIDS
(5437)
2. Healthy Kids, Healthy Care Telephone: 1-800-598-5437
3. The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) (For State Licensing information) Telephone:
1-800-424-2246 (Child Care Aware)
4. National Child Care Information Center Telephone: (800) 616-2242
5. ChildCare.gov (Website)
Many states in the USA have minimum daycare regulations and licensing requirements that apply to daycare, home
daycare and after school programs. These requirements vary for different types of providers. You can also get step
by step information about daycare regulations and what you need to do by purchasing a daycare business starter kit.
There are many currently available and some of them go into great detail on daycare regulations and how to get a
license quickly and easily. This is a good starting point if you're considering starting a daycare business or any
similar service.
